Our little beach was recently extended by the building of a new seawall in front of our resort. The new addition was a joint effort with our neighbors both north and south of us and commenced in late June.
The seawall was built with the intention of preventing debris and seaweed from washing up on the beach, keeping our area clean and beautiful and giving our guests a little more beach area to wander off to and enjoy.
It was interesting watching these professional construction workers work their magic in creating a durable and safe seawall. First sinking large cement pillars into the sea, attaching plywood to the pillars creating a box and then creating a framework of rebar for strength and durability. A concrete mix was then poured into the frames creating the seawall.
For added protection large rocks were placed on the outside to break the waves before they hit the seawall. On the inside of the seawall large rocks and heavy landfill, was deposited and tons of sea sand placed on top.
We must say that the newly built seawall could not have come at a better time with the recent hurricane Earl that hit Belize in August, leaving our little island picking up the pieces and rebuilding where necessary. The seawall being much further out now than the original seawall helped tremendously in preventing the waves from reaching the buildings during the hurricane.
Some trees were knocked down around the resort and our once beautiful and scenic dock has been so badly damaged that we will have to rebuild it.
Xanadu has already built a temporary dock for our guests to be picked up and dropped off at, when they go on tours and our seawall is now complete. The sand up against the wall that was lost due to the hurricane has now been replaced.
Watch this spot for updates – soon we will begin to build a new and better dock for you all to enjoy.
